William Dixon, LCSW

“Consider me your professional forest ranger. When you’re stuck in the trees, it is hard to see the beauty of the woods. We will develop a strategic roadmap together, giving you the tools to navigate the path ahead safely and the perspective to appreciate the forest behind you.”

Engineering Solutions for Life’s Transitions

William Dixon is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with an extensive background in crisis intervention and substance use recovery. He views therapy as a collaborative process of “fine-tuning,” operating on the belief that no individual is “broken.” Instead, he recognizes that the systems of a person’s life-their routines, interactions, and habits-may simply be out of order. This perspective offers the fundamental hope that things can, with the right support, be returned to order. William works with his clients to identify where these systems are underperforming and provides the practical coaching necessary to return them to a state of optimal functioning.

A Systematic Approach to Wellness William’s unique clinical lens began during his time as a Mechanical Engineering student before he transitioned into social work. During this pivot, he began personally designing his “Back to Basics” program, a framework built on the same critical problem-solving skills used in engineering to develop solid, workable solutions for life’s struggles. He likens behavioral change to both engineering and the culinary arts; while a person’s daily interactions are always functioning to some degree, they may not be performing to the level the person desires. Just as a chef fine-tunes a recipe to reach its full potential, William helps clients adjust their daily “recipes” for living to achieve the outcomes they deserve.

Clinical Expertise & Approach William brings a wealth of experience in managing high-acuity crises, having served at Lake Behavioral Hospital in Waukegan and as a therapist for the Lake County Health Department’s Crisis Care Respite Program. Within the Crisis Stabilization Unit, he specialized in helping individuals stabilize from acute mental health episodes, using a structured approach to avoid hospitalization and return the individual to their community baseline.

William specializes in working with children (ages 10+), adolescents, and young adults, serving as a dedicated partner to parents navigating their child’s development. He utilizes Token Economy Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to help families realign their daily routines for success. As a committed ally to the LGBTQ+ community, William ensures an affirming environment where every “system” is respected. He utilizes evidence-based modalities including:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

a functional, values-based approach that helps you stop fighting internal struggles so you can focus on purposeful action. It is highly effective for “fine-tuning” life by teaching you to accept what is out of your control while committing to the specific habits that move you towards the person, you want to be.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

a future-oriented, goal-directed approach that emphasizes your strengths and previous successes rather than focusing on past problems. It is an effective tool for “fine-tuning” life by helping you identify your existing resources and develop a concrete, step-by-step map to reach your desired outcomes.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • a highly practical, goal-oriented approach that focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is an essential tool for “fine-tuning” daily life by helping you identify and restructure unhelpful thinking patterns, allowing you to respond to life’s challenges with greater clarity and more effective actions. Token Economy Therapy (TET)
  • a structured behavioral approach that uses immediate reinforcement to help individuals build consistency and accountability in their daily lives. It is an effective “fine-tuning” tool that provides a clear, visual map for success by rewarding positive actions, ultimately helping individuals transform desired behaviors into long-term habits. Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • a collaborative, person-centered approach designed to strengthen your own motivation and commitment to change. It is an effective “fine-tuning” method for helping you resolve ambivalence and tap into your internal drive to align your daily actions with your personal values and goals.

Personal Background: A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, William has been a fixture in the Lake County clinical community since 2018 and has served clients throughout the state in Southern and Central Illinois. Outside of his practice, he enjoys the precision of the culinary arts and the harmony of vocal performance as a formally trained baritone. These passions reflect his therapeutic philosophy: that with the right technique and a bit of fine-tuning, every system can perform beautifully.
